Hell Freezes Over: The Leafs are #1!

November 5, 2011

Yesterday’s tweet of the day on 4 November 2011 (for myself and several million other Toronto Maple Leaf fans) was “Hell Freezes Over – the Toronto Maple Leafs are now the NHL’s #1 team…” I have proof!

Now I know, its only the beginning of November and there have been countless times that a team in the lead this early in the season has crashed and burned and not made it into the playoffs. I am also fully aware that these are my Toronto Maple Leafs, who are prone to regularly breaking their fanbase’ hearts. Instead of the rampant hatred of my Leafs, how about a little empathy for those of us that have been waiting – some of us, all their lives, for a moment like this. A moment we can savour when the haters come out saying ‘plan the parade’ and all their other tired cliches.

Leafs Nation has a young, talented team to follow, with several prospects in the wings, pushing for their chance. With the current mix that includes the NHL’s current scoring leader, a captain who has found both his will to lead and his skillset to do so by example and a legitimate goaltender, the Leafs are pushing for the consistency that leads to success. That said, their defence (Luke, you listening?) and PK both have to improve – they will not be able to simply out-score the opposition 5 on 5 enough to make up for the breakaways and powerplay goals against. Add Phil Kessel continuing a career year, James Reimer back in net, Mike Komisarek turning into a consistent 3rd pairing guy, David Steckel providing his usual consistent face-off ability and Jake Gardiner speeding around and throwing out those awesome passes  and this will be a fun year to be a Leaf fan.

Today (5 November) the status has changed and there are two additional team up at the top of those standings, but for one day, my Maple Leafs blue heart was pumping higher, stronger and faster than it has in years.
