Houser hits the Trifecta

May 27, 2012

London Knights’ star goalie Michael Houser has done it again. He just keeps on winning the hardware. Earlier in the playoff season, House won the OHL Goaltender of the Year and was named the league’s MVP. Yesterday afternoon, on the off-day between the semi-final and today’s final at the Memorial Cup, he received the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Year award. He was also nominated for the CHL Player of the Year, losing out to Brendan Shinnimin of the WHL Tri-City Americans.

Jon Howe/Canadian PressHe and Shinnimin have something else in common, though – neither were drafted into their respective junior leagues or the NHL.  Houser is playing in the final of this year’s Memorial Cup and Shinnimin led the CHL with 134 points. Both are examples of what can happen when you work hard and forget the tags that can get hung on athletes.   Too short, too small, too slow, physical ailments and other assessments were made, but both of them persevered with their careers and when given the opportunity, showed that they belonged, starring for their teams.

Don’t believe what everyone else says, believe in what you can do – then go out and prove it. These guys did just that and this year they showed everyone just how good they really are.  Shinnimin signed with the Phoenix Coyotes in February, but so far, no NHL team has done the same for the OHL’s record holder for wins in a season (with former Windsor Spitfire Andrew Engelage).

Michael Houser has one more game this year to impress NHL GMs and win a contract.  A win by his London Knights in the Memorial Cup final would solidify such a chance. But win or lose, you have to think that someone will have to give the House his chance.
